This policy update, scheduled to take effect on April 30, marks a significant shift from Airbnb’s previous stance, which allowed indoor cameras in common areas with disclosure. The new, more stringent guidelines highlight Airbnb’s commitment to addressing the pervasive issue of hidden cameras in rented properties. The move is expected to impact a smaller subset of listings on the platform, as the majority of hosts do not currently report having security cameras in their properties.

The decision to implement this new policy was informed by several high-profile incidents involving hidden cameras in Airbnb rentals, prompting widespread outcry and legal actions. For instance, a couple filed a $75,000 lawsuit against a host in Maryland for allegedly placing hidden cameras in the bedroom of a property they rented. Similarly, in a separate incident, a newlywed Chinese couple discovered a hidden camera in an Airbnb room in Kota Kinabalu, prompting intervention by Indonesian police.

In an effort to reassure hosts concerned about security, Airbnb emphasized that devices such as doorbell cameras and noise decibel monitors are still permitted, offering a privacy-protective means for hosts to monitor their properties. However, the company made it clear that outdoor cameras are not permitted to monitor indoor spaces or areas such as enclosed outdoor showers or saunas.
