Remember when Survivor was the first reality show? Those days are long gone and with reality TV a firm fixture, it’s surprising its stars don’t have a union to protect them. But fear not, as SAGAFTRA – the largest entertainment union – has entered the scene, ready to champion for the rights of reality performers.
Since merging with AFTRA in May 2012, SAGAFTRA’s union membership has expanded to include on-air personalities, TV anchors, and more. So, it only makes sense for reality stars to be embraced by this powerful organization.
SAGAFTRA is no longer turning a blind eye to reality stars. They are actively working towards protecting these performers and putting an end to the exploitative practices that have plagued the industry. The guild has made it clear that they are determined to engage in a new path to union coverage.
Expressing their frustration, the guild stated, “We are tired of studios and production companies trying to circumvent the union in order to exploit the talent that they rely upon to make their product.”
This response from SAGAFTRA was sparked by Bethenny Frankel, a former star of The Real Housewives of New York City. Frankel recently suggested that reality stars should consider going on strike to win residuals for their work and combat workplace abuses. Although reality show hosts are covered by the guild’s Network Code, the same protection does not extend to contestants—a discrepancy that Frankel highlighted.
In a recent TikTok video, Frankel voiced her concerns, saying, “Why isn’t reality TV on strike? I got paid $7,250 for my first season of reality TV, and people are still watching those episodes.” She passionately emphasized that reality stars are the backbone of the industry and that they should receive proper compensation for their contributions, especially when more prominent Hollywood stars are striking.
And we tend to agree. Reality TV stars should be entitled to residuals, as it’s their faces and personalities that can make or break a show, much like your favorite TV stars. SAGAFTRA’s support for Bethenny Frankel’s rallying cry to unionize reality stars is a remarkable step forward for the industry. It signals a shift towards fairer treatment and recognition of the invaluable work these performers contribute.
