Buffalo Bills Dealt a Blow as Nyheim Hines Sidelined for the Entire 2023 Season

The European News Global

The Buffalo Bills’ upcoming training camp took an unexpected turn with the unfortunate news of running back Nyheim Hines being ruled out for the entire 2023 season. The setback, resulting from a non-football-related mishap, was recently revealed by esteemed NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero. Hines suffered a significant knee injury off-site, involving a peculiar jet-ski accident where he was struck by another rider while stationary on the watercraft.

In his tweet, Pelissero disclosed that while Hines was sitting stationary on his jet ski, an unexpected collision occurred with another rider, leading to serious yet non-life-threatening injuries. The severity of the situation necessitates surgery, meaning the dynamic running back will be unable to participate in the upcoming season.

Hines, acquired by the Bills ahead of the 2022 trade deadline from the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for running back Zack Moss and a conditional sixth-round pick, had shown promise as an impactful player for Buffalo. Though he only appeared in nine games, starting just one, Hines made his presence felt both offensively and on special teams.

During his limited playing time, Hines showcased his versatility by recording five receptions for 53 yards and a touchdown from the backfield. However, his most notable contributions came as a return specialist. Last season, Hines made an impressive 19 kickoff returns, accumulating an average of 29.2 yards per return and successfully finding the end zone twice.

Hines saved his most remarkable performance for the season finale against the New England Patriots. That day, with the Bills seeking an emotional victory following safety Damar Hamlin’s on-field collapse against the Cincinnati Bengals, Hines stepped up to create a memorable highlight. On the very first play, Hines returned the kickoff for a touchdown, electrifying the team and fans alike.

With Hines sidelined, the Buffalo Bills will have to adjust their plans for the upcoming season. The team had anticipated his contributions as a primary returner and a rotational presence in the backfield. In light of this setback, it is likely that the coaching staff will now rely on the experience and skill of Latavius Murray to fulfill the rotational role among the running backs. Additionally, wide receiver Deonte Harty may be called upon to step up in the return game.
