The upcoming general election on July 23 seems to hold little promise for democratic progress. With the systematic elimination of opposition parties and the disqualification of viable alternatives, the ruling Cambodia People’s Party remains the sole credible political force. Hun Sen’s administration has left no room for genuine political competition.
Hun Sen’s crackdown on media outlets further undermines democracy in Cambodia. The closure of Voice of Democracy and the blocking of independent public information portals reveal a growing disdain for press freedom. These actions suppress dissenting voices and curtail access to unbiased information, leaving citizens with limited avenues for acquiring news.
Human rights groups and advocates have implored the international community to put pressure on Cambodia to protect democratic principles. However, many countries have maintained diplomatic relations with Hun Sen’s government, opting for cautious condemnations and limited sanctions. The absence of significant intervention has left hopes dashed for those seeking democratic change.
It remains uncertain whether the international community will take more decisive action in the face of Cambodia’s diminishing democracy. Some speculate that a change in Cambodian leadership is necessary for a new approach to intervention. The inevitable victory of the ruling party in the upcoming election is seen by many as a stepping stone for Prime Minister Hun Sen’s son, Hun Manet, to assume power. However, challenges within the political landscape and the resistance from other politicians and the public complicate the potential succession.
