SAGAFTRA Might Impact Emmy Nominations’, Comic-con’s and Others’ Red Carpet Events

European News Global

What if you held a red carpet and nobody came? It may sound like a Hollywood nightmare, but for organizers of fall film festivals, studios planning summer premieres, and the ongoing Emmy campaigning, this nightmare scenario has become a reality. The recent contract negotiations between the actors’ guild SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have ended without a deal, leaving festival teams and programmers in a frenzy. Major events like the esteemed Venice and Toronto film festivals will be severely impacted, while even the renowned Comic-Con will suffer from the absence of actors and writers representing their projects.

Despite the unfortunate strike, the excitement for the upcoming 75th Emmy Awards remains palpable. HBO, once again, takes the lead with an impressive 127 nominations, proving their continued industry dominance. Their sibling streamer Max adds to the tally, resulting in a slight decrease of 13 nominations compared to the previous year. However, other streaming platforms have also put forth strong contenders. Netflix secures 103 nominations, Apple TV+ lands third place with 50 nominations, while Hulu and Amazon’s Prime Video stand equal with 42 nominations each. Notably, Disney+ leaves its mark with 40 nominations, though a correction from Disney reveals that Hulu actually earned 64 nominations, accounting for FX/Hulu shows.

HBO’s success rests heavily on a select few shows, with 74 of their nominations (58% of the total) attributed to just three series: Succession, The Last of Us, and The White Lotus. However, the network boasts an additional fifteen programs receiving nominations from the academy.

The SAG-AFTRA strike undoubtedly casts a shadow over the excitement of the Emmy Awards. As we eagerly await the winners, it’s disheartening to envision empty red carpets devoid of the incredible talent that would have graced these prestigious events. Nevertheless, the strength and creativity of the television industry will endure, and we hope a resolution can be reached for the betterment of all. Stay tuned as we navigate through this unusual chapter in Hollywood’s illustrious history.
